ARTIST’S BIOGRAPHY

Taos artist, Tom Rogers studied at the School of Art, Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, and at Florida International University, Miami, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio painting.  He also received a Bachelor of Arts in English literature from Fairleigh Dickinson University, NJ.  A native of New Jersey, Rogers has lived, worked and shown his paintings in Miami, Atlanta, and the New York City area.

In Taos, New Mexico, he has exhibited in several shows at the Millicent Rogers Museum, The Harwood Museum and Taos Invites Taos, 2008, 2009.  Rogers has been represented by Bryans Gallery, Collins-Pettit Gallery, Envision Gallery, and, The Taos Gallery.  In Santa Fe, he has been represented by The William and Joseph Gallery.  He has had nine one-person shows in Taos and his work can be found in notable collections locally and nationwide.  Rogers is a founding member of the Taos Society of Portrait Artists.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT    

A lifelong impulse has inspired my continual process of exploration and productivity with an irrepressible urge to create a unique body of art.  After focusing on high realism and portraiture for almost a decade, I started painting abstractly which greatly reinvigorated my creative impulse and artistic intention.  Initial imagery came from dreams and spontaneous visual ideas upon waking.  Subsequent imagery is generated from areas of earlier paintings that have lines and brushwork that fascinate me.  New paintings emerge when I enlarge and expand these areas onto new canvases.  My body of work grows in this progression. 

My focus is on movement, color, line, varying edges, organic shapes and layers.  I work with a deliberately shallow depth of field and a juxtaposition of hard edges and painterliness to create images that are spirited and stimulating.

My studio is located a few miles north of the center of Taos.  I welcome visitors by appointment. Please contact me.
